Finnair ( IATA : AY ) pilots are set to go on strike from 16th Nov in rejection of a mediation proposal by the National Conciliator.
The strike will cause all Finnair flights on Monday to be cancelled and many long-haul flights departing on Sunday will be cancelled too.
Kristian Rintala, President of Finnish Air Line Pilots’ Association ( SLL ) stated that the pilots had no problem over pay cuts or increased productivity, to which they willingly agreed, and that the dispute is regarding who is allowed to fly aircraft subcontracted on Finnair routes. “SLL cannot give management an open power of attorney to use labor of other companies at a time when a significant portion of its own pilots are furloughed”, he further stated.
The management stated that they were shocked to hear of the strike.
The issue as learnt by AIR is mainly regarding employment of expatriate pilots, which has recently been a problem at quite a few airlines such as Jet Airways and Air India.
Finnair pilots are without a labor contract since last November.
The strike was initially announced in late October and the unions have decided to go ahead following unsuccessful talks with the management.
